Meeting Minutes from the 2001 Annual Meeting

The 2001 annual meeting of NEAP was hosted by Dr. Don Harn on October 20, 2001 at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, MA. Forty-five members attended. In addition to numerous poster presentations and a lively business meeting, the attendees enjoyed 11 oral presentations. Topics included "Heartworm in cats: diagnosis, epidemiology, and pathobiology" by Dr. Sharon Patton, President of the American Society of Parasitologists; "Evolution of virulence of amoebae and Giardia" by Dr. John Samuelson; "Innate and acquired control of African trypanosomes in Cape Buffalo" by Dr. Sam Black; "Developing a DNA vaccine for schistosomiasis" by Dr. Akram Da'Dara; and "Helminth parasites of the domestic cat in Connecticut" by Dr. Dennis Richardson. The remaining presentations were given by students on research projects involving elasmobranch cestode hyperparasites, Trypanosoma brucei and T. cruzi, Brugia, and Plasmodium falciparum.

The business meeting began with the transfer of the office of President of NEAP from Dr. Andrew Campbell to Dr. Michael Cappello. The report of the Treasurer, Dr. Eugenia Zavras, was given and new business discussed. A vote via email ballot to extend the term of the office of president from 1 to 2 years passed unanimously, and the NEAP Constitution was changed accordingly.

We would like to thank the host, Dr. Don Harn, and sponsors, NEOSE Technologies, Inc., New England Biolabs, and Pfizer of Groton, Connecticut, who made this meeting possible.
